Tamil Matrimony and Their Simple Rituals

Tamil matrimony involves simple yet elegant rituals that have been followed for years. Traditions and customs are given primary importance in any Tamil wedding. Though within the Tamil community there are a number of rituals that do have minor changes depending upon the regions however the basic functions and other rituals are similar and each has its own implications.

The Tamil matrimony is not just the union of two individuals but it’s a ceremony that binds together two families as a single unit. More than on the actual wedding day there are several other customs that needs to be performed prior to the wedding. One of them is the adorning of the seven clay pots with sandalwood paste and kumkum powder. Then comes another tradition wherein the nine types of the grains called as the Nava dhanyam will be packed together along with some curd. All these tradition are done with sanctity and beliefs that has been established by the ancestors.

Another ritual is the Kalyanaponnu which involves giving bath to the bride to be with turmeric and other aroma oils. This is performed both at the bride and the groom’s house independently. After this function the bride and the groom are not allowed to go outside their houses and not see each other until the main wedding ceremony is completed.

Besides this, there are a number of other rituals like navagraha pooja, Nandi Shaartham, Vritham, Official engagement and janavasanam. Most of them form part of the wedding function but there are a few changes that could be seen region wise.

On the day of the wedding there is another ritual called Mangalasnanam. The priests will decide an auspicious timing which is based on the birth date of the bride and the groom. That is the timing during which the bride and the groom shall take bath on the day of their wedding. The timing usually will be early in the morning much before sun rise. As per the traditional writings the best time of the day is the Brahmamuhurtham which is the time just before the sun rise. After the bath the women folk at the bride’s place will do an aarti ceremony of her and only then she could starts dressing for the day. Then the wedding happens and then after that there are small customs like the kasi yatra and Pada Pooja which are also performed by most of the Tamil communities.
